Rain rule
Rain rule for local cricket: revised targets and live par
Rain, bad light or a late start: when overs are lost, the target has to change. AwaySwing works out the revised target for you, and shows the par score during the chase so everyone knows who's ahead.
How it works
A team's chance of scoring runs depends on two things: the overs it has left and the wickets in hand. When overs are lost, the AwaySwing Rain Rule compares what each side had to work with and sets a fair target. It's our own method, built from published research.
Live par score
During a chase that rain could cut short, the scorecard, the match page and the stream show the par score: what the batting side needs to have scored right now to be ahead if play stops.
Other ways to decide
Some local competitions prefer simpler methods. AwaySwing also offers average run rate and most productive overs, set per competition.
Not the official method
The AwaySwing Rain Rule isn't the method used in international or professional cricket. It's made for local and grassroots cricket, where a fair, consistent answer on the day is what matters.
Questions
What is a par score?
The score the batting side needs at this moment to be ahead if play stops now, given the overs and wickets it has used.
Can our league use a different method?
Yes. Each competition chooses its rain method: the AwaySwing Rain Rule, average run rate or most productive overs.
